BLUETOOTH VS AIRPLAY: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Posted by Henry Yeung on

Want to know the difference between Airplay and Bluetooth? You’ve come to the right place.

With a plethora of wireless speakers out there using Airplay or Bluetooth, we thought explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both technologies will help you determine  which suits you best.

So what are Bluetooth and Airplay?

Bluetooth is a universal wireless platform that is found in a wide range of electrical devices that includes mobile phones, laptops, cameras, printers, household items and even cars. No longer is it a silly piece of plastic sticking out of the ears of businessmen and women worldwide!

In the world of audio, Bluetooth speakers allow your music to be played wirelessly from one device to another connected device. Click here to read our recent, more in-depth blog on Bluetooth.

Bluetooth vs AirPlay: What’s The Difference?

AirPlay on the other hand, is Apple’s own proprietary Wi-Fi dependant wireless platform, allowing users to stream digital audio or video content to other AirPlay supported devices. Click here to read a previous blog about Airplay and its benefits.

Are the two really that different?

There are distinct advantages and disadvantages to both AirPlay and Bluetooth. Despite both frequently being used for wireless streaming, Bluetooth and AirPlay actually operate using two completely different technologies.

Perhaps the most noticeable difference between the two is that AirPlay offers the capability to stream video. While not relevant for wireless music speakers, this is a popular method of streaming YouTube or other videos onto devices such as Smart TVs.

Unlike Bluetooth, which connects directly (or ‘point to point’) between devices, AirPlay creates a connection by ‘piggybacking’ on your home Wi-Fi network.

Bluetooth vs AirPlay: What’s The Difference?

With AirPlay being an Apple patented technology, it’s only available for use from OSX devices, Mac computers and iOS devices, unlike Bluetooth which works across a much wider range of devices made by a huge number of manufacturers. This also typically means that AirPlay supported devices will cost more because of the licensing fees and technical costs.

Is one better than the other?

If we were to stick both in a boxing ring and let Airplay and Blutooth duke it out to the end…. There wouldn’t be an outright winner. Like many things, it all comes down to personal taste of the individual. To give a further explanation of the two, we thought we’d outline their relative pros and cons.

Airplay Pros:

  • AirPlay has the capability of playing across a much larger distance between devices than Bluetooth. Instead of the usual Bluetooth range of 10-20m, distance is limited by the reach of the Wi-Fi network. This means you can wander your house freely while the tunes keep on playing! (As long as your WiFi network is connected and working, you might need to read a different blog if you’re home network is dodgey!)
  • Furthermore, AirPlay uses lossless compression, but anything streamed over Bluetooth uses lossy compression.
  • AirPlay offers direct communication between the iOS device and the AirPlay speaker, including volume control.  When using AirPlay you’re actually capable of controlling the volume of the Airplay speaker (not just the volume of the iOS device).

Airplay Cons:

  • One of the disadvantages of using AirPlay is that the products have to be networked, which of course varies in complexity depending on the network and device. Generally speaking, it’s a relatively straightforward procedure not too different from using Bluetooth.
  • AirPlay is only available on Apple and a small number of other certified devices.

Bluetooth Pros:

  • One benefit of Bluetooth is its extremely wide application, working with a number of devices and operating systems. This is why you’ll find Bluetooth devices that run Android or Windows Phone, not just those running Apple’s iOS software.
  • With Bluetooth it is possible to control only the volume of the original device that your music is streaming from, not the connected device (such as the wireless speaker).
  • Bluetooth is capable of sounding very good. The Minx Air range, for example, supports not only the Standard Bluetooth Codec (SBC), but also AAC and aptX. This means that if your phone, tablet or computer supports AAC or aptX, audio will be sent, received and processed using this higher grade codec than SBC.

Bluetooth Cons:

  • Unlike AirPlay, Bluetooth-connected devices need to be in close proximity. This is typically 10 to 15m, compared to a potentially larger network with AirPlay.
  • Bluetooth streams in lossy compression, which is not as good as AirPlay’s lossless compression.

TIC Bluetooth5.0 Mesh Speakers and Amplifiers can help you build up a mesh network  with a signal transfer of 200--300feet , when you don't have wifi signal. While TIC Wifi(AirPlay2) Series can help you get a better muitiroom sound system.

Do you currently use Bluetooth or Airplay speakers? Perhaps you prefer one over the other, or avoid wireless streaming altogether… Let us know with your comments below!
